A tropical botanical sanctuary engineered to soften clean concrete architecture, handle extreme monsoon precipitation, and deliver resort-like serenity.
THE ARCHITECTURAL BRIEF
Softening modern lines without cluttering open living spaces.
The homeowners had recently completed construction of a contemporary cubic villa in Panampilly Nagar, Kochi. While the architecture was striking and clean, the surrounding outdoor ground was raw, red clay soil with steep water runoff toward the boundary wall.
Their requirement was straightforward: create a lush, low-maintenance garden that looks like it has always belonged to the house, provide stepping pathways from the gate to the sit-out, and ensure that torrential monsoon rains never accumulate near the foundations.
During the June–August monsoon, over 3,000mm of rain falls in Kochi. The flat plot lacked natural slopes, risking waterlogging and root rot for lawn grasses.
We excavated concealed perimeter percolation trenches lined with geotextile fabric and perforated corrugated pipes, routing rainwater into deep groundwater recharge pits.
Curated Botanical & Material Palette
Every plant species was hand-selected from our nursery for Kerala monsoon tolerance, shade adaptability, and minimal shedding.
Concealed warm brass uplights were aimed into the broad leaves of the Traveller’s Palms, casting dramatic architectural shadows onto the villa’s white stucco exterior walls after sunset.
