THE ARCHITECTURAL BRIEF
Creating a micro-climate cooling heart inside a family home.
In traditional Kerala architecture, the central courtyard (*Nadumuttam*) acts as the natural lung of the house. In this Thrissur residence, the architect designed an open atrium surrounded by living spaces and bedrooms, but the enclosed space suffered from high humidity and harsh midday glare.
The client wanted a serene garden that didn’t feel like an overgrown jungle, required minimal weekly upkeep, and introduced the gentle acoustic sound of flowing water to mute urban traffic from the nearby street.
Standard lawn grasses wither in enclosed light-wells due to limited sunlight hours and damp air, while ordinary soil creates mud splatters onto glass walls during heavy showers.
We eliminated dirt turf entirely, substituting it with deep washed river pebbles over a sub-floor drainage grating, combined with shade-thriving epiphytic ferns and architectural Frangipani.

Species carefully conditioned in our nursery to thrive in high-humidity, indirect tropical light.
The water feature uses a hidden mechanical and biological filter chamber beneath the stone paving, maintaining crystal clear water without chemical chlorine that could damage plants or koi fish.
